Corfu, April 18 – The Municipality of North Corfu, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Education of the Ionian Islands and the Directorate of Secondary Education of Corfu, has approved the establishment and operation of a Unified Special Vocational High School (EN.E.E.G.Y.-L.) within the municipality. This decision, dated March 31, 2026 (6-40/31.03.2026), marks a crucial step towards providing equitable educational opportunities for students with special educational needs in the area.
Addressing a Long-Standing Need
The establishment of this new educational institution comes as a response to a pressing reality that has long been overlooked. Currently, students from North Corfu with special educational needs are compelled to travel significant distances daily to Corfu Town. This daily commute often results in physical and psychological strain for the students, while placing a substantial burden on their families. According to reports, at least 10 students are currently experiencing these challenging conditions. The need for a local facility is further underscored by the anticipated enrollment of graduates from the 2nd Special Primary School who will require continued specialized education.
Strategic Planning and Location
In response to this disparity, the Municipality of North Corfu has proceeded with a clear orientation and a well-documented plan. The new school unit has been approved for co-location within the Karousades High School complex. This existing facility offers the necessary classrooms, accessible spaces, and infrastructure to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the new special vocational high school. This strategic choice aims to leverage existing resources while providing a suitable environment for specialized education.
Next Steps: Securing Resources and Funding
Concurrently, an integrated request is being prepared for submission to the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports, as well as the relevant educational authorities. This request will seek the issuance of the required administrative acts, the timely staffing of the unit with the necessary educational and scientific personnel, and the securing of essential funding. The ultimate goal is to enable the new school to commence operations by the upcoming academic year.
Commitment to Quality and Future Growth
The Municipality of North Corfu has also pledged to undertake the necessary technical interventions to adapt the spaces and to continuously support the operation of the unit. This commitment aims to ensure conditions of quality, safety, and dignity for all students attending the new special vocational high school. Beyond an immediate solution, this decision sets a strategic objective: the creation of a modern, autonomous Special Education school complex. This future complex is envisioned to cover all levels of education, from kindergarten to high school, and will be situated on municipal land, signifying a long-term investment in inclusive education for the region.
